Bead Soup Blog Party Day

Welcome to the 3rd Bead Soup Blog Party!
What is a Bead Soup Blog Party?

Each beader was paired up with another jewelry designer and tasked with sending the following:

~ A focal

~ A special clasp (not just a lobster claw)

~ Some coordinating spacers or beads

Using the focal and the clasp was mandatory, but we could use anything from our own stash to round out the rest, and choose to use the coordinating beads or not.

Here's what I made!

Terry at Tapping flamingo sent me the orange glass focal bead and several other goodies. I have to admit that I have never made a piece of jewelry with orange as the focal and I don't usually use silver, unless I am making something for someone who wears it, so this assignment was definitely out of my comfort zone.
In the end, I decided to attach the focal bead to a larger wooden bead (actually a pair of clearanced earrings that I took apart!) and make an asymmetrical necklace, with black and silver as the other primary colors.
While I consider myself a creative person, I think what this swap taught me is that part of my joy in creating is the purpose of the item. I admit that I got a little bogged down in the fact that this piece had no purpose, no destination--as I mentioned I make jewelry mostly as gifts for others, and myself to wear. I had a hard time giving the piece an identity because I didn't know its purpose. I want to work a little more on just enjoying the process and not stressing over the purpose.
A big thanks to Lori at Pretty Things for pushing me outside my limits and for taking on the monumental task of organizing a swap with over 200 participants!
Come see what the rest of us made!

love the asymmetry of the piece. funny how we both were on the same wave link and did asymmetrical pieces.

Oh love those multi strands........

Awesome! It's got a great old-fashioned Asian feel. I'm loving how exotic it is! Those beads are so large; you were bold and brave putting them all right out front like that, but you totally made it work and it looks fantastic. :D Great job!

I understand what you mean about purpose -- but maybe that's your nudge into starting to sell your things! Someone will love that piece. When I make things that aren't in my favorite colors or styles, those seem to be the pieces that get snapped up first at craft shows. Go figure! But I believe there's a person out there for everything we make.

You did a great job!

I love how it came out - and love your thoughts on your jewelry needing a purpose. Even without a "purpose" it's a terrific necklace!

For a piece of jewelry that had no destination, I think you did a great job in your creative journey! I love your piece!

Love that glass focal on the wood piece and the asymmetric design. I would love to see it photographed on a plain white or off-white background. I think the red eats it up a little. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am finally learning to create in the zone without a purpose= amazing things happen. Hope to see you next round too!!

that is lovely! well done!!

I like what you did - I wish I could see the focal super close up though. I agree with jamberry song - it definitely has an Asian feel, which is right up my alley (tastewise, but I don't really show it in my jewelry, which is funny).

Anyhoo, as out of your zone as you felt - you did a great job :)

Regina said...

Love the design, its colorful and bold. It does have a chinese/oriental dragon thing about it, thats a good thing. Have you figured out its purpose yet? Maybe you can donate it as a fund raiser for some worthy cause. I bet it would bring in some good money.

Beautiful necklace! You did a great job and I'm sure you will find the perfect person to give it to if you don't end up keeping it for yourself. :-)

Holly said...

Stacie - isn't it amazing how looking at things that are different will throw you off? But I think you came through in the end! This is a gorgeous, dramatic necklace!

Jennifer Cameron said...

love the focal, absolutely beautiful!

roseworksjewelry said...

Hey - you might have been pushed out of your comfort zone, but you rose to the challenge! And that's the point of the whole thing right?

Patsy Evins said...

Well, I think your necklace is beautiful and that's purpose enough!

Maneki said...

Very nice necklace! I like the asymmetry and the multiple strands. Really like how you framed the focal.

Jen Judd said...

I think sometimes the process actually IS the purpose. :) I say that but have stacks of finished jewelry that should probably go somewhere...haaaaaaaaa
Take care!

Very interesting and eye-catching piece! Great job!

Still working my way through all the blogs. I enjoyed your comments of the purposelessness of your creation and how it bogged you down. Great recovery, lovely necklace

Rebecca said...

Wow! Look at that amazing focal! You've made a really beautiful necklace. PS So glad to meet another city (at heart!) girl! Everyone in Blogsville seems to love and live in the countryside....give me a busy city any day! x

That is one of the things I love about the Bead soup Blog party is what you learn from it. I got these large soft pink pearls I never would have bought but I think my piece turned out nice and as a result I may buy more. I on the other hand like orange and I think you did a great job- It is hard when we are not comfortable with doing something new. Alice's beads and Baubles
