Un-Scary Cupcakes

Our Fall Festival at the church was yesterday and the Rev and I were in charge of Cupcake Decorating with the kids. Man, it is hard to find fall cupcakes that aren't witches, spiders, mummies, or other scary stuff! I finally settled on scarecrows, pumpkins, and fall leaves, and I thought that they turned out pretty good. And the kids had fun!

Getting everything together was a bit of a challenge in this Walmart only town! I needed leaf sprinkles for the tree cupcake, but we didn't have any here, so I went with fall M&M's instead. My other substtution was due to my own cheapness. Can you believe a little bottle of sprinkles is like $2? I needed alot for the pumpkins, so that price was not cutting it. If you are ever in a pinch, just use regular food coloring--the kind that comes 4 little bottles in a box--along with the color chart on the back of the box, and color your own sugar. You just add the right amount of drops, and then kind of stir with a fork until it is all blended. This also comes in handy if you want a color that is not readily available.

So, that is what we've been up to this weekend, what about you?

The One Where I Confess That I Lied....

Remember here when I told you that for one time only I let some Tarheels stuff into our house? And I swore it would never happen again? Well, I lied...

1/2 of Team Jacie celebrated a milestone birthday this past weekend and I got to make the cake. His Mrs. wanted a Tarheels themed cake and wanted the number "30" worked in there for some shock value. I went with a basketball jersey cake, complete with his last name and his new number, 30. It wasn't perfect--cake decorating is nerve wracking--but it sure did taste good, and the birthday boy was happy! So, I guess it was worth it.

That Takes The Cake

I am always up for a challenge, so when a friend asked me if I could do a baby shower cake for her using fondant, I said OK. Mind you I have never used fondant, never made a tiered cake, and have really only decorated one other cake, unless we can just count slapping some rainbow chip icing on as decorating...

We talked and talked about it and she gave me her color scheme and what she wanted incorporated and I set off to the internet to do my research. What none of my research told me was exactly how much kneading is involved with fondant and how bad my hands would hurt for the next 3 days...if you are looking to grow Popeye forearms, just knead some fondant and you will be good to go.
But the cake turned out great, the mom-to-be was pleased and I can add another one to the "Things I Have Tried" column.
